NEW CONTACTS MADE DURING MEETING DRINKS
Busy talking to each other about interests, favorite foods, big dreams and long journeys. Numerous topics were discussed during the meeting drink on 15 November in café Blauw in de Omval. There is no shortage of conversation material…

'Initiative to go to the movies together'
'Beyond expectations, nice talk'
'Casual setup'

30-03-2017: another introduction via Diemenvoorelkaar.nl (blog written by intern Shannon):
Last Friday I got to meet a gentleman who lives in Diemen-Zuid. I found it exciting but also fun to enter into this encounter. It was a nice meeting and I learned a lot about Mr. Mr. has always been a real do-it-yourselfer. I had also noticed the furniture in his house. For example , there is a wooden table with a drawer in it and a nice chess/checkerboard on legs in the living room. What struck me is that he also loves pets. Mister has a cat named Maupie (a real cutie of a cat!), two birds that he has had for almost 10 years and some fish.
During the conversation I tried to gauge whether I can do something for Mr. Mister had no preference at first and then I suddenly got the idea to help him with shopping. Mister does his shopping every Friday, but indicated that he sometimes had trouble with that. He has difficulty walking, so I thought it would be a useful idea if I could support him for a few hours. He responded enthusiastically and that makes me happy, because in this way I can mean something to Mr. It doesn't matter if it's a big job or a small job, as long as I can see someone else's smile at the end of the day.
Greetings,
Shannon

23-03-2017: the introductory meeting was successful!
What a nice afternoon it was... there were more than 40 participants and more than 20 matches were established. Awesome!
The introductory meeting on March 16, 2017 (blog written by intern Shannon):
Last Thursday I was able to attend the third introductory meeting of Diemenvoorelkaar. The day was all about getting to know the local residents of Diemen who have a request for help or an offer of help. After reception, the guests were served with a tasty sandwich and a coffee or tea. The program started with a question and answer game to find out what the local residents have in common . For example, questions were asked such as 'Who in the room has a pet?', 'Which one of you does a sport?' or 'Do you have a mobile phone or iPad?'. All guests were given a green and a red card with which to give their answer and they were given the opportunity to explain their answer, so that all participants could learn more about the person in question.
After the question game, the participants were split into two groups (buddies/jobs), depending on the choice given. The participants discussed each other at the table and got to know each other. The buddy group was looking for matches to go out, go for a walk or visit a movie or theater. The chores group involved people who need help with certain chores and people who want to do chores for others. The details of a nice contact were noted in his or her program booklet.
I enjoyed being part of this successful day. Many people have been able to find one or more matches thanks to this meeting and that was nice to see. Besides the website of Diemenvoorelkaar it is nice that a meeting like this exists. The next introductory meeting will be held in the fall. For those who are interested; sign up for the newsletter of Diemenvoorelkaar: https://www.diemenvoorelkaar.nl/nieuwsbrief/inschrijven and keep an eye on the facebook page for more information!
I hope to see you then!
Greetings,
Shannon

A walk through Diemen (blog written by intern Shannon Marilyn ):
Today I had my second appointment with the gentleman who lives in Berkenstede. He wanted to go for a walk to the mall, so that's what we did. Luckily the weather was with us, because it was dry until we were back at his room in Berkenstede (Yay, lucky us!). We had a nice drink at a brasserie in the shopping center and chatted about my work, volunteering and other things. It was obvious to the gentleman that he liked to go outside. He told me that he only goes out once a week and that touched me.
Unfortunately I found out during the walk that it is quite difficult for me to go on a trip with someone who is in a wheelchair and that I cannot physically handle continuing my trips with Mr. Volunteering gives you a lot of energy, but it is very important to see what suits you, also physically. I was very optimistic about my expectations with Mr. and that I could go on trips with him even though he is wheelchair bound, so I am very sorry. Now that I have experienced this, I will again look for someone on Diemenvoorelkaar.nl with a request for help.
If one of you is interested in going out with this friendly gentleman and you are especially well able to push a wheelchair, register yourself on the site www.diemenvoorelkaar.nl and contact me or the hotline of Diemenvoorelkaar. https://www.diemenvoorelkaar.nl/contact
Until next week!
Greetings,
Shannon

Hello all!
My name is Shannon, I am 22 years old and I live in Diemen. I am studying Cultural and Social Education (CMV) at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and I recently became an intern at Stichting Welzijn Diemen and a volunteer at Diemenvoorelkaar.
The reason why I'm going to do volunteer work is because I like to do something for someone else if they need help with something, for example . I also get a lot of self-satisfaction from that. I will share my experiences with you every week, with the hope that I will inspire you to do volunteer work (one-off jobs or for a longer period of time).
Greetings,
Shannon

The first meeting
Yesterday I had my first meeting with a gentleman who had registered via the website. He is 84 years old and has lived in Berkenstede for about 1.5 years. Today we went for a drink in the Grand Café.
I experienced this meeting as something unique. This is the first time that I do volunteer work and I was very excited to enter into this encounter in the Grand Café of Berkenstede. Although I was nervous, the meeting went well. I thought it was nice to see that Mr. was having a good time. That smile on his face made me feel good about what I was doing, which was making time for him to do something fun together. And that's the great thing about volunteering: it's satisfying, helping someone else.
Next week another appointment is scheduled and then we go for a walk to the shopping center (if the weather is a bit favorable...) I'm looking forward to it!
