On the road together in Diemen on World Alzheimer's Day
Diemen voor Elkaar as well as many Diemen residents can look back on a very pleasant and successful World Alzheimer's Day last Wednesday, September 21.
On this sunny day, many enjoyed a walking route that led to all kinds of activities in the center of Diemen, with a large team of Diemen voor Elkaar volunteers supporting the day. The day started with the opening of the art exhibition “Art with each other” in the town hall, followed by the presentation of the certificate “Dementia Friendly Municipality” to Alderman Social Domain, Marian Everhardt. The certificate was presented by Fred Cohen, chairman of Alzheimer Amsterdam. Both agreed that good cooperation between the various organizations in Diemen has created a nice dementia network with short lines of communication.
"Extra attention to dementia" was the theme of this special day where people could meet each other during the walking route at various locations in Diemen. Talk to each other over a cup of coffee in the Omval or drop in at De Diem where people could sit down for a drink with something delicious. Listening to troubadour Anouk who performed recognizable songs on the market.
While shopping on Diemerplein, people sometimes shared heartwarming and recognizable stories about what Alzheimer's does to you when the disease affects your partner, a family member, a good friend or one of your neighbors.
The well-organized program offered a nice platform to exchange ideas, to receive forget-me-nots, but also to discuss “what do you give” and “what should others not forget”.
